Double Bass Acoustic not Image

The double-shot has side-firing woofers instead of down-firing.
I'd expect this to sound quite different. (never heard them though)

Well I've used a ten2 heard the smaller 110 with the downfiring woofer in a few different situations. To me the Doubleshot is much closer to a traditional bass cab sound, punchier and a lot more going on in the mids, but still veering to a more open natural sound. The mids are juicier and fatter and the cab seems bolder, louder although I've never tested the limits of the older AI cabs.

The older cabs were so amorphous, so spread out around the room. Sometimes it sounded great and sometimes there was just no body to the sound.

Yes, I brought my Chadwick for most of that tour, but the acoustic gig was in the middle, but in St. Louis where I live, so I used the old bass. The Chicago set was several days after the tour, but we sort of considered it the "end". So I drove with the old bass. I got rear-ended in Springfield on the way, as well. No gear damage, though!

I've been happy using an AI Focus to drive a Wizzy 12M and VL208 by Euphonic Audio.

These days, I mostly use the Focus to drive two composite cabs built by Mike Arnopol - a Crazy8 and Crazy88.

For price to power ratio, hard to beat a powered PA speaker IMO. They can have two channels, mic inputs and 1/4 inputs, high wattage, full range spectrum, and can easily be put onto a pole stand. I have been using a Yamaha 1x10 that is pretty great. Can plug right in or put a preamp box in front.

I mostly use my Focus to drive an ACME B2 + B1, sometimes more or larger cabs like a pair of B2s or a B4. On rare occasions I'll stack them all & bridge with a Thunderfunk head for a thunderous low end! It is not the volume I'm after, it is that amazing thick low end that fills the room.

ACME cabs have that low end like nothing else. Earth movers.

FYI, The Acme Low B2 has about the same max SPL as the DoubleShot (118dB)

93dB 1W/1m sensitivity rating.
350W RMS power rating.

Max SPL: [Log(350) x 10] + 93 = 118.4db.

This is why I know 118dB is not enough for me. The amp I used with my Low B2 was considerably more than 350W. This rig got the job done in big band, but I had to use restraint to avoid clacking the voice coils in the woofers.

I do agree that this Low B2 sounded pretty natural with upright. The low end was hyped, which is not authentic, but it sounded very good. I actually liked it better with bow. IMHO, it had a really nice, smooth arco sound, but not enough dynamic range for pizz.

I think a pair of Low B2s would have been great. Double the power, and double the speakers gives you +6dB. 118 + 6 =124dB...which I identified earlier as my desired minimum.

I totally accept that some of you are good with a Low B1, which would have a max SPL of 112dB. Per the specs, the max SPL of the AI Upshot is also 112db. If you know your minimum is 112dB, then great, you should be totally satisfied with a DoubleShot.

If you don't know your minimum, then be careful because it is better to have more headroom than you will ever need, rather than not enough.
