i realize this may belong on the double bass side, but this side is way more active. i play in a acoustic trio, i play upright bass with a acoustic guitar and a mandolin. sometimes i will play my electric bass and have been leaning that way lately.
i use a pickup with my bass and they both are using condenser mics. while i like the natural sound of the instuments the condenser mics are really hard to deal with as far as feedback. the use of these mics does not alow us to get loud enough inside bars to be anything more than background music. they do work oudoors quite well, but just are not cutting it indoors. there just is no presence to the music.
i am going to approach them about getting pickups for there instruments but would like to have some ideas about what pickups and preamps would be best for guitar and mandolin. we play bluegrass mixed with rock stuff. i was thinking a stomp box style preamp with good pickups. we dont need lots of gear, just something we can plug into our pa head.
