Acoustic String Noise

This isn't really an "Instruction" question except insofar as it could only be asked by a total noob :).

I've been wanting to learn bass for a while now (as evidenced by the creation date on this account :/), and other than the usual quandary of deciding what gear to buy there's been one thing holding me back. The only reliable practice time I'd have is early in the morning while the rest of the house is asleep. How load is a typical unamplified bass? Is it plausible that I could use a preamp with headphones while a fairly light sleeper in the next room remains undisturbed by the acoustics of the strings?

If you slap really hard they might hear the clacking, but normal playing is inaudible through a closed interior door.
