Action is a bit low

The action on my bass (a Lakland 44-02) is making it so the strings touch nearly the entire fretboard. This is the first time I've strung my bass by myself and I'm not sure what I'm doing worng

well... if your bass was like that before you changed the strings. you might want to try adjusting your action??

The action was fine before I took the old strings off, but when I put the new strings on, it became unplayable. I tried putting the old E string back on but that buzzed too

did you use a thinner gauge or a different type of string than the other set? might just need a truss rod adjustment. might need to raise the action a little, too.

It sounds like you went to lighter strings. A truss rod adjustment should do the trick.

Ya gotta go learn about setup. This, along witha manual from your bass mfg'r and a little time and patience and you'll be able to setup up precisely to your own tastes and desires.

once a bass is`sweet' and the strings get changed they may have more or less tension than what was strung before,plus the weather!,,i'm resetting up all my axes and i keep them inside the bedroom but it's changed from 105F and i just couldn't deny a couple of them needed re-set-up so last night i reshimmed a couple necks including my guitar(that i don't hardly play),,now to set the saddles,intonate T_H_U_M_P_! all that vital testing!,hey! it's an excuse to not work at my job
