In what direction are you turning the truss rod tool? Too many turns in the wrong direction and you will decouple the nut from the rod.

At this point that is exactly what he should do: remove the nut if possible and see what is going on.
If you are going to work on your guitar at this level, you need some of Dan Erlewine's books. They are not to be without. No U-Tube videos of questionable origin. Real instructions from a craftsman. StewMac is the place for them and tools that you never thought you needed. First thing that comes to mind is Gorgomyte guitar cloth. Really, winging it is not a great idea. This forum is a great place to start and this is some great advice. Let the pro's get you started in the right direction or bad stuff happens.
