Active Bass Pot Layout

Hi guys, need a bit of advice if possible.

I'm getting my Peavey Grind Bass fitted with a pair of EMG 35CS', but because the person I'm buying from doesn't have the original EMG pots/electronics, I've been given free reign over the signal path and pot layout.

The bass has four pot cavities drilled, so the simplest way to wire would be "volume/tone" for both pickups wired in series, but I'm wondering what would give me the greatest variation of tone.

The bass itself is a backup (my main bass is an Ibanez EDA900) but depending how it sounds, I may start using it more. I mainly play heavy metal and rock, but if I can find the personnel I may try and start a functions band so it would need to be pretty versatile.

A couple of options I have are Master Volume / Master Tone / Tone 1 / Tone 2, or Master Volume / Selector Switch / Tone 1 / Tone 2.

Any advice appreciated :)
