Just out of curiosity, what other companies (other than Fender) make active jazz basses? I know Modulus makes a couple (the Vintage j and the Genesis vj) which are very nice. I am looking for good quality and preferably around $800 (give or take). All input is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Not necessarily in your price range, but Lakland, Lull, and Sadowsky come to mind. A Lakland Skyline may be close in price. Dingwall and F Bass make active J's too, but they're a little dear.

All those basses are very nice, but unfortunately awfully expensive. Is there anything for a bit cheaper?

You could get a used Carvin SB4000/5000 for that price or even cheaper, best active jazz I've ever played personally.
