Active Jazz Pick Ups

Hey guys. I have a MIM active jazz, and was thinking of upgrading from the pickups that it came with. I was hoping I could get some suggestions of one to check into. I like a nice punchy, but balanced tone if that makes sense. I like playing everything from funk to Rage Against the Machine and 311 if that helps. Thanks

BTW, I did do a search, but most of the stuff I found was for passive pick up replacements.

O.K, the more I read the more confused I get. I'm not sure of the difference between active and passive with a pre amp or whatever it's called. In a MIM deluxe active jazz could I use Nordstrand NJ4s or Ultra Js ? I'm reading all these reviews, but I don't know how to tell if I can use them alot.

If your MiM Active jazz is stock then it has Passive pickups and an active preamp as most "active" basses have.

I believe EMG is one of the few companies to consistently make 'active' pickups that can operate on their own, and their EMG Active preamp system that works with them, or their EMG passive pickups.

I'm thinking your setup is a basic passive pickup/active preamp system as most basses have. Any passive pickups that are the right dimensions should work fine.

i want to replace the pickups in my mim jazz5 active as well. i have already removed
the preamp, running passive which improved the sound, but it is still a little thin.

IMO single coils are the kings of tone but are noisy. i will probably go with some
good split coils.
