Horrible thing to happen to anyone, particularity when young.

I also feel for the driver, if he isn't at fault, it's something that will haunt him for life.

Even if he is at fault, man that's gotta suck.
I mean I guess if he/she is some kinda narcissistic emotionless sociopath with no empathetic feelings sure, no sweat.

It reminds me of a young lady my father treated for drug & alcohol abuse back in the early 90's
What was strange in this case, was that we actually saw the incident that lead her to trying to kill herself and eventually her family getting her into treatment & therapy.

What happened was she had apparently been in a rush that morning after ordering her food at McDonald's I don't recall all the details as to why she was rushing, coulda been anything.

Anyway, she was parked directly across from the drive through window and proceeded to back out of her spot very aggressively, she clipped an older kid and his brother knocking one kid onto the ground violently and forcing the other kid to jump up and hold the trunk lid.

When she realized what she had done, instead of braking (I assume) she panicked and hit the gas full throttle driving the boy right into the side of the building and up against the window.

She probably got up to about 15+ mph before impact and crushed the boy from his sternum down. I'll leave the graphic details out but it wasn't a good scene at all. Both parents were there, the lady completely lost control of her emotions, and the place was packed full of people. It was pretty bad. My father attempted to help the boy, who was still coherent at the time while waiting for EMS. It was decided by several adults that it was best to leave everything alone and just try to keep the boy comfortable.

Once EMS arrived we stayed for a very short while and my father made us leave as he did not want us to see what was more than sure to happen. (Very unlike my dad, he's always taken us to the morgue as kids, scary movies, watched bad car wrecks) but he knew this one was gonna be more than we were mentally prepared for.

Short story long, the boy died at the scene, the driver and both parents were all treated for shock or whatever, and the brother was treated and released to family.

Several months later the driver was admitted into my fathers care for treatment due to her inability to get past what she had done. She apparently had attempted (unsuccessfully) suicide numerous times since the accident.
I don't know what ever happened to her, but I can't imagine her conscience ever allowed her any peace.
It's really a sad story, and she was such s nice lady otherwise, all because she needed to hurry up for something, which by the way I'm guessing she never made it to anyway.

Moral of the story, don't freak out when late, don't rush through life, and slow down and take a breath, NOTHING is so important, you should risk you or others safety to get to.
