Adapter for playing direct with Facetime/Skype/etc

Hi all,

This is a little complicated. I live in a condo so I do all of my practicing through headphones. That part works great. I put the DI from my amp head into a mixer so I can then play along with my stereo or any other audio input. Then I come out into my headphones. That all works no problem.

Sometimes I do bass lessons via Skype or Facetime. I'm trying to figure out how to come out of my mixing board into either my iPad or laptop so the other side can hear me play. So I need the headphone or aux out from the board to go into the device, and then also have a headphone jack so I can hear the other side.

I picked up a StarTech adapter that's supposed to do this:

But it's not working. The audio is fine for hearing the other side. But my bass is highly distorted and barely audible. So that's not working.

Is there a better way to do this? I've heard this cable may not be the best quality but haven't found any alternatives.

All you need is a proper USB interface like a $100 Focusrite Solo plug it and that's it. You don't need to use your mixing board.

as suggested, using a basic audio interface will simplify your life greatly. But if you want to try and 'make it work' with what you've got, you'll need to look at your settings in Audio Midi Setup (Utilities Folder). from there you can set your input/output, bitrate, and even create aggregate/multi-output devices.

It may not be perfect but might get you where you're going.

Focusrite 2i2. I got one recently and sounds great.
No distortion, go direct into it or use your amp's pre-amp
into it for more tone control.
