We just added a member to the band kind of impulsively. We've had a bevy of rotating musicians sitting in with us so we approached it as her being a rotating member until we're comfortable with full membership. It's been a few months but we're just starting to work her into the fold permanently because she's started writing songs that fit with our style and definitely brings a lot to the table musically. Prior to this we were a three piece and could occasionally sound a bit hollow.

I think the win-win deal is to inform a new player in the band that they are on a six month trial period. At the end of six months, if they are still there, the band will have a meeting and will decide if the player is to be a full band member. Most employers have some type of probation period when they bring in new people. Why should a band be any different?
