Adding a Serial # to Partscaster

Hi all,

I have a "partscaster" precision bass. Fender MIM body with Warmoth neck and Fralin pups. It has no serial # or distinguishing markings on it.

What is the best way to add a serial # to the back of the headstock? The serial number is for theft protections / insurance purposes.

My gut tells me sharpie or paint pen. But I'm worried somebody could simply remove this with acetone etc.

I've always used the neckplate and gotten a custom number stamped in it. Then, I write the same number in a few other places that won't be easily seen unless you take it apart
If you really want it on the back of the headstock, you could get a decal and then overspray it. Not sure if Sharpie would survive the clear coat.

Yes, I also intend to use my DL number. I'd like to put it on the back of the headstock and not hidden in a cavity. This is to keep it from quickly being bought and sold. It's unlikely a pawn shop or guitar shop is going to take the instrument apart in search of my hidden serial #. But they'll certainly find it on the back of the headstock.

I only write the serial number in other places so that if someone removes the visible one, I can still prove it's mine.

@gln1955 has the right idea. If you going to mark it for identification purposes, emboss that sucker. That's as permanent as it gets. Also, DO NOT use your DL#, SSN, or any other identifying information. What happens when you sell it? Just make a number up like the julian date and year you built it or marked it.

This. Don't use a DL or SS number. That may have been cool in 1974. These days? Not very bright.

Male up a number. If you need a second layer of security, have someone take pics of your embossing the headstock.

Heck, for that matter, use your initials as part of the made up number.

A serisl number for todays date and year would look like this 20122, add initials and you have S201K22
