advice for my first rig

my mates and I have been toying around with the idea of forming a band for the past 4-5 months. We just got a house, which means we have a suitable place to practice, and now our ideas are beginning to solidify.

we plan on gigging eventually, and I need some help on building my first rig (playing out of a little 40 watt amp isn't cutting it anymore).

in all honesty, i don't know much about anything when it comes to this. I've searched and read some good threads, and learned some things, but I'm still in the dark when it comes to what I need.

we're a folk rock quintet and our lead guitarist is playing out of a 2x12. when and if we do gig, we'll probably play small venues, art galleries, and the like.

budget wise, I'm trying to be as cost efficient as possible. I would say $800 would be my limit as of now. and I'm not looking for any monster rig, just something suitable, light, practical, and the ability to compete with my drummer and guitarist.

Take a look at the Traynor site and check out the XM200T combo. I've used one for some pretty loud gigs and it held up and got a very good sound. It comes in 2X10 or 1X15 formats. I picked the 2X10 because it carried to the audience better than the 1X15. Durable, great warranty, made in Canada. It has all the features any amp that size usually has including an effects loop and a useable D.I. It can also power an extension cabinet. I paid $599 Canadian for mine when I bought it. I think the Traynor/Yorkville stuff is the best bang for the buck in North America.

Not particularly light at about 68 lbs. but in that price range that's pretty normal. You pay through the nose for high powered, good sounding pro level gear that's light.

If your guitarist is using a 212 i'd go with a 2X10 and a 1x15 or just a 4x10 setup
