I have been shopping for a fretless, left-handed bass guitar for over a month without much luck. I currently play a 5 string active Ibanez with Nordstrands, and a Gibson Thunderbird. I used to have a cheap electric upright, but it has fallen apart. So, I am really jonesin' for a fretless. The options I have so far are:
1) Ordering an Indonesian Sire Marcus Miller ($700-$800). Options here are the body wood (alder or swamp ash), and style (P bass or J bass). I am thinking an alder jazz would sound best fretless? Build time 2-3 months.
2) Ordering an American made, G&L L2000 (~$1800) or SB-2 (~$1500). L2000 has the double humbuckers with all the push/pull, series/parallel, blend, pre-amp goodness. SB-2 has the neck P and bridge J pickup combo. Other options are rosewood or ebony (+150) on the fingerboard.
3) Other custom shops recommended for fretless? I've poked around on the internet, most I find are in the +$2500 range, which I think is out of my budget.
4) Wait for a six string, LH, fretless, Korean made Wolf bass to show up again in the US. ($600).
The G&L is right on the line of what I'm willing to pay to add a fretless to my collection. I really don't know much about fretless though, and am in need of advice on tone woods, pick-up selection, number of strings, pairings, etc. I am up for placing an order soon, but I have ZERO opportunity to play my options beforehand (don't even start with the "go down to your local music store and give them all a try" speech ). Anyone's experience and advice with fretless and/or the brands I'm looking at buying from would be appreciated.
