Advice on 210/410 bass cabs

Hi

Basically i've just bought an Ashdown MAG 410 cab rated at 8ohms to go with my MAG 300w head, but I only realised after that my head is rated at 4ohms so will only produce about 200w i've been told my Ashdown with this setup. My previous 210 cab which was rated at 4ohms was producing 250w, so essentially i'm losing 50w by upgrading to the 410 cab.

In anyones experience would this be a noticeable loss in sound or with it being 4 speakers as opposed to 2 would it probably sound about the same? On looking i've noticed that the 410 produces 101db whereas the 210 only produces 98db so not sure if this will provide a noticeable noise difference.

Any experience anyone could share would be a great help thanks

You should check out some of the FAQ threads stickied to this forum, especially the ones about ohms and wattage. The truth of how that works is often opposite of what we non-electrical engineers initially assume.

Your amp is rated at 300w at 4ohms, which does mean you'll be using about half to two thirds of that with an 8ohm load. Now, if your last 210 was a 4ohm cabinet rated up to 250w and your amp is 300w, you were running the risk of burning up those speakers. If you didn't burn them up, it means you were never using all 300w from your amp to begin with, so you're not really "losing" anything with the new 410. You're only gaining volume.

Short answer, you're better off now. Probably much better. You have more speakers, which equals more volume.

Ok great this helps a lot thanks. The 210 cab came as a package with the 300w head so I guess i'm lucky that I never pushed it hard enough to burn up the speakers!!

No problem. Do you still have the 210? And are you sure it was a 4ohm cab? The only Ashdown 250w 210 cab I can find online is an 8ohm.

Yeah, it wasn't until I was taking these pics to sell it that I realised, I know now that they have upgraded their amps and they seem to all be 8ohm now for the MAG range

It would be wise to read the faq's and stickies, to gain a better understanding on how all this works. But, bottom line is: wattage is not as important as you may think, and getting good volume from a bass guitar is all about speakers.
