Hey guys, I'm stuck in a rut here and i could use some advice from yall. I want to buy a big muff but im stuck between either the Sovtek or the Bass big muff. I've heard positive things about both for bass. Obviously the bass big muff is built specifically for basses themselves but i want to be sure here. I'm a big robert sledge fan (Ben Folds Five) and i know he used an old green sovtek so i'm leaning more towards the russian at the moment. Any advice?

Advice on choosing the right big muff

Sure! Listen to sound clips, and see which one you like more. Really, it is all up to what you like, and hey, most places online have a return policy.
Go with a standard Muff. I had a russian and it was good, but I do like my USA muff better. It doesn't have very much in the way of low gain sounds. They're easy to mod how you want, though. You can clone an old green one relatively easily.

Bass Big Muff seems like a safe bet these days, but the old russian did sound good. More bitey than the USA reissue I had a while back Best is to try them all. If you can't, go for a Russian from a store with a return policy and if it doesn't work for you, get the bass version.

Personally I have a NY Reissue muff and don't like it. It works fine(ish) for guitar, but on bass its just mud to me. I do however like the Muff on my Bass Pod Xt, which is modelled on an old Rams Head Muff. My advice is get a 2nd hand Bass Pod Xt, or buy a kit to build a Rams Head Muff. Not tried bass muff, but probably a good bet.

the black russian big muff is alot smoother than the american version. the bass version supposedly sounds alot like the black russian when its in normal mode. the green russian has more sustain than the black russian. the little big muff is the same as a regular american big muff
May I suggest, for a muff-type fuzz that you'll be able to tweak to your liking more than an EHX, the Barber Trifecta?

the BBM sounds like the green russian. The black is actually crunchier IMO but the BBM IS close, and is awesome. I would start with a BMM before investing in any muff clones, seriously
