Double Bass Advice?

Hey all, I'm getting Simandl New Method for Christmas, but until then, what should I use to practise? I've just been running through scales so far and getting used to the instrument. I get a teacher in the New Year.

Any simple pieces for me to learn? I can already read music as I'm an advanced piano and clarinet player.

A teacher would help the most, by providing you with books that suit your needs and are up-to-date. If you want simple pieces, when I started 17 years ago, I learned from a series of books by George Vance.

I think that it's the same as this series, but my books had a different name ("Bass Project Repertoire Book 1"). I had six little books of pieces ranging from very easy to fairly tricky.

I'd suggest:
1. continue with the scales
2. if you plan on branching into jazz start transcribing from the "Oscar Peterson We Get Requests" record.
3. Any piece by Eccles would probably be a start
4. Stay excited and keep playing, but do realize that without a proper reference or someone telling you when you've done the job correctly it'll be work that is going to have to modified down the line.
5. The beginning of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] piece is easy enough, it is not a classical tone necessarily but it will give you some ideas of different positions and possibilities of the instrument.
