Affordable but worthwhile fretless

Squier Vintage Modified series gets a LOT of recommendations around here.

Check out Link Removed, as well.

What's your budget? How many strings? Do you have a preference for active/passive, string spacing at the bridge, body shape...? Are you looking at getting an electric fretless, or more of a double-bass replacement?

I’m after an electric fretless probably a nice simple passive 4 string. I’m not really sure on a budget at the moment I'm just trying get a sense of how much i need to spend on a fretless that i wont want to replace a few months after i get it :P

Edit: The basses on rondomusic look appealing especially the price, are they good basses and does that site ship to UK ?

I got a Squier VM a few weeks back and agree it is a lovely bass for £200. It did need copper shielding though as it was slightly noisy but then so did my Fender MIM P bass. Maybe I am just too particular about having a silent bass!

I'm surprised no ones mentioned an actual Fender yet. You can get a used Fender MIM Fretless for around 250 USD. I'm not sure how much that is in euros, but it should be somewhere around 200. The Squier VM is a good bass, but I just prefer to see "Fender" on my headstock, especially being that it's my only fretless. It's a great bass, excellent playabillity, good parts, great tone. :D

SX from Rondomusic.com is my choice. I just got a sixer from them and while it's no competition for a custom? It's more than capable, and cost so little that I'm thinking of making them the "Bass of the Month Club"(I always wanted a blue one). Check them out they have a wide range of affordable stuff.

+1 to Dean, I always forget about those.

If you want to spend a little more, I *love* my MTD Artist 5. I bought it used on eBay for $425, and they make a fretless version (and 4-string), too. Mine is fretted, but it's become my #1 bass for playing live, over a few others costing up to 5 times as much, including my custom build.

I love my MIJ Fender Jazz Fretless. The MIJ Fretless Fenders have unlined necks which I am a big fan of.

This is my first Fretless bass and I love it.

Can't help but think a 2nd hand Lakland 44-01 Fretless might be an option also. I saw one for sale recently but I cant think where at the moment

I like the Squier VM fretless better than MIM fretless :hiding:

You ain't flaming us MIM fretless owners at all. I own a MIM
fretless J bought used and it's great for the money. It also happened to be about the only really afffordable fretless J-Bass from Fender to be had at the time I bought it. The Squier VM is fairly recent and it seems that Fender has spent a little bit of extra time on it to make it a great value. I wish
the VM had exsisted when I was shopping for a decent yet
cheap enough fretless.
