Hey everyone, I have been plying electric bass for some years now and would really love to give stand up bass a try. Can someone point me in the direction of a cheaper stand up bass. I'm not expecting great quality I just want to learn.

Double Bass Affordable stand up bass

Hi, Phil - welcome to the world of the double bass. Start by reading the sticky topic at the top of this forum labelled Newbie Links - lots of good links there to info on buying a double bass. And unless you've been playing very high-end bass guitars, be prepared for sticker shock.
Thanks man, I recently bought a pretty expensive musicman stingray hh 5 but that seems cheap compared to these bad boys.

I played one of those a few months back. That one was horrible!!! He was quoted 700 to make it playable. He sold it the way it was and put the money towards an old englehardt.
This is how I feel. Just want to try it out and see how I like it/ how it feels, but don't want to fork out $1000 for one.
I think i'm going to buy one off the web aroung Christmas time.

Well you fork out 1000 or 1500 and can most likely get that back out of it! You gamble 600 or 700 and it folds on its self or is just plane junk how much do you think you'll get out of it? The guy I know sold his for less than 300.
Is there anywhere local you can rent? That would be money better spent! Atleast you should get a playable instrument.
Then your best bet is to rent one. Much cheaper option and no commitment. That ebay bass would be a huge mistake.
I did think about that but I was also told that many of the 1200-1500 ones are made in Asia too, might eben be the same place that sells the 600 ones?
I just bought 2 6 string acoustic bass guitars for less than 300 shipped from Asia and they are awesome. Even after I refinish them, upgrade the electronics and hardware and set them up I will be way ahead than if I had bought two Asia made Warwick aliens at 899 apiece.

I aksed a guy playing in a bluegrass band I saw a year ago here in Fairfield CT about upright and he told me that he had another one at home that cost 500 off ebay and he said if I wanted to get in to it that it actually wasnt that bad of an instrument.
Dont mean to upset anyone but I bought a violin for my daughter and when she brought it to her lessons the instructor couldnt believe I paid 70 bucks for it from China!
She told me it looked like a 2 or 3 hundred dollar student instrument.
And someone told me the inexpensive uprights are not bad so I figure I might order 500 upright and take a chance?
Not to mention I use my AMEX for paypal so if I'm not satisfied I get my money back.

The problem with getting a cheap one off of ebay or Sam Ash is that the setup will be horrible, perhaps to the point of discouraging someone from even wanting to play it. Rental would be the way to go to test the waters.
Getting a Shen SB80 with a good setup has allowed me to go from never having touched one to playing 5 nights a week with a alt-country/bluegrass band in the span of 6 months. Never could've done that with an über-cheap bass.
