Maybe not a plant on the Tonight show's part, but she was on "Pumpcast News" before, so she knew the deal. At least that's they way I understood it.

The monitor at the gas station is supposed to work just like a tv, showing current events or the news. It's not supposed to interact with people. That was the gag.
