Don't know what you use but a small cab on the floor can blow right by you, when I'm in that situation in say a jam I try to get out in front of the cab far enough so that I am within range of the speaker's direct dispersion so I can hear it.
I use a 2x10 but the stage was really small.as usual and no room to step forward.

Glad to read you tried this. Getting most small to mid sized cabs off the floor gets rid of mud and boom.
