Every July I fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina to participate in a series of jazz concerts. I always take my electric upright bass in a flight case. United and Delta have always charged considered the bass as and additional baggage and they charge me $100 EACH WAY.
This year, I flew United there and America Airlines back home (to LA). United charged me the usual $100. American Airlines charged me $100 for it being and additional baggage AND $150 for oversize!!!!!! They charged me $250!!!! Luckily for me, I was 1 POUND under the accepted weight (50 pounds) or they would have charged me ANOTHER $150 for overweight.
This means that If I had flown AA both ways I would have paid and additional $500 to take my bass there and bring it home. If my bass had been 1 pound heavier they would have charged me $800 to take my bass there and back!!!!!!! This is outrageous!!!!!!
Avoid American Airlines when traveling with your instruments!!!! They are the WORST airlines for musicians! Better said, AA is NOT AN OPTION when traveling for gigs!!!!!
Don’t even consider AA.
