Alembic ....dead instrument or knock off

I recently saw an alembic for sale on Ebay for 400 bucks. I knew there was some thing off but I was willing to gamble the 400 if it was a dead instrument. I didn't receive it for months and figured it was a scam. Five months after writing it off as a scam it arrives at my house. It looks brand new so I plug it in to see what gives. No sound. I check the cavity and there is no battery ? I do a little research since I know nothing about them except they re way out of my price range. After my research I find that there is some specialty cord that powers them. Could I make this thing come to life with some sort of cord mod?

Yeah... there are four possible scenarios when you see an Alembic (or Fodera, or Ken Smith, or MTD etc) for sale for $400:

1. Fake instrument, scam

2. It's hot and someone really, REALLY needs to unload it (probably for crack money, our former guitarist did this with a friend's guitar he 'borrowed'... yeah, dugs are bad, kids)

3. It's in absolutely atrocious condition, like, survived a house fire or a flood or fell out of a moving truck and got run over by a car or something, meaning it would need extensive time effort and expense to restore

4. (by far the least likely scenario) someone either inherited or was gifted the instrument, has no idea what it's worth and didn't bother to check, and is selling it, in which case I could not in good conscience pay them that little and I'd inform them that it's worth more. Like, maybe 10-15 times more.

I bought a near mint Alembic in a pawn shop for $500.

Man, how useless was the pawn shop owner for not even doing the most cursory research on what it was worth? The cheapest used Alembic I ever came across (real one, from a reputable seller) was about $2k, and it was one of the more basic models in a good condition with a fair amount of normal wear and tear.

I AM curious as to what you managed to get away with!

Knock off, knocked out.

Either bogus, stolen, or angry divorce.
Minor thread derail.

The worst 'angry divorce' I ever heard of concerned a good mate who was a touring guitar tech. He made a lot of money touring, but was a bit lax with his tax affairs, so in case get got felt-up by the tax office, he put his house in his live-in girlfriend's name. You can see what's coming, right? So, he's out on tour and he has has a short, sexual fling with a female member of the touring crew. Unfortunately, another female crew member, who just happened to know my mate's OH, got wind of it.......and called up the OH back home.

OH didn't call him up and go on the warpath. Nope, she bid her time.

A couple of months later, the tour wrapped, and crew began flying home to their respective countries and cities. It was at this time that my mate found he couldn't get a hold of the OH. The house landline was ringing out (this was in the days where good mobile 'phones were expensive to buy and run plans on) and calls to the OH's family said she was ok, just busy doing theatre FOH stuff. So, he arrives back in his home city, and takes a cab from the airport to his house. Walks up the path, puts key in the door....nixxi. Lock won't open, so he rings the bell. After a few seconds, a man opens the door. 'Who are you? What are you doing in my house?' cries my mate! 'I effing LIVE here!' says the man. A heated conversation takes place before reality sinks in on my mate.

The OH, on getting wind of the fling, waited a wee bit before going into action. Took his calls during that two month period after the fact, made it look like nothing was wrong. During that period, she put the house on the market, sold it, and made the new owners' entry date the day before my mate was due home. Took off with everything, even what was sitting in their joint account. Oh, and their toddler son. She never told a soul, not even her family. She went underground for a month before both sets of families began to raise concerns for her mental health and the well-being of the child. When she finally was discovered and questioned, it all came out. Including the fact that she eventually moved in with the mechanic who serviced my mate's Saab cars!

Anyway, back to this ephemeral Alembic.

I remember the golden days before the internet, long before pawn-shops wised up and began to work off retail catalogues. Rare '60s Gibbos and Epis would fly right under their nose for value, and could be seen sitting in the windows for £50.

Is this $500 Alembic in the room with you?

Years ago when you could still find used Series I basses for about $1000, a guy walked into a local store to trade in his. He even had the external power supply box. He was a senior citizen retiring from playing in a polka band :wideyed: and asked if he could get $100 for it.

The store owner told him what it was really worth and refused to buy it for $100. I think he told me he gave the guy $700 and hung it on the wall with a $1000 price tag.

Of course, I couldn’t raise that much money in time and it was soon sold.

Then another guy showed up with a B15 and wanted $100 for it… :woot:

So that "Local Store" was DEFINITELY not the shop from Pawn Stars!
