alkaline trio

How does the bassist from the Alkaline Trio (Dan, I believe his name is) get that awesome sound. I'm talking about the sound in Goodbye Forever, Snake Oil Tanker, and especially Hell Yes. It sounds bassy, yet really growly and clanky. How does he do it?

I've seen him use a Jazz in the newer stuff, I think he even has some sort of signature bass with some small company that's a jazz. I want to know about his earlier stuff, I think he played a P/J, but i don't know for sure. I'm just lost on how he gets that distinct sound. Oh, and those are great P/U's :)
