Alleva-Coppolo?

No. A PJ requires a hum cancelling J pickup, and that is not Jimmy's thing. The PJ also doesn't really fit into the 'boutique vintage' vibe of what Jimmy is trying to do. That doesn't mean it might not happen down the road though if he decides to develop an HC J pickup. Waste of time IMO... hope he sticks to the 'classics'.

The Xotic J basses are made in Japan. The hardware is Hipshot USA and the pre for a while was made in the US as well but is now made in Japan. I own a 4 and 5 string Xotic J bass and they are extremely versatile.
As far as Sadowsky's being brighter with stronger mids and the Xotic being more bottom heavy and thicker sounding.That Is not necessarily the case overall. Body woods make a difference. The Xotic 5 string J bass has a alder body with a rosewood fingerboard and it does have a noticeable bottom thickness to it vs the brightness of the Xotic 4 string which has an ash body with maple fingerboard.
If midrange is ones thing, the Xotic J bass definitely delivers. In the back are two midrange switches with a total of 4 position options.
Overall the Xotic J bass electronics system(along with the pickups of course) is very versatile and when in passive mode it really does sound passive.
There are some great J basses on the market today and Xotic really has their own flavor, which is needed in the clutterfest of modern J basses today.

I have an Alleva Coppolo KBP-4 and a Sadowsky Metro RV5. I recently sold a Lakland USA Bob Glaub. They are all excellent basses. I sold the Lakland only because I couldn't justify having 2 P basses that cost $2000 plus. In my opinion (and I must say that it was a very difficult decision), the Alleva Coppolo has a more vintage sound than the Lakland, so I decided to keep the AC. The build quality of the Lakland was like that of a tank and the neck felt incredible! The Alleva Coppolo has a more organic quality to its sound and feel. The Sadowsky is my new love. It really is modern sounding even though the pickups are in the 60's position. I also have a Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn that is an excellent quality instrument and has a much more vintage sound than the Sadowsky. Those Skylines are really exceptional especially considering they are made in Indonesia. The only thing I didn't like about it was the finish on the back of the neck. The Glaub has a nicer unfinished feel. That can be solved with 400 grit sandpaper, if you're daring (I'm not). If Lakland offered 34" scale necks on their 5 string basses, I would have bought one instead of the Sadowsky. Then again, now that I've played a Sadowsky...
I really don't think you can go wrong with any of these basses. None of them are lacking in any way, shape or form. Honestly, I prefer the look of Alleva Coppolos, I think their headstocks are nicer looking and more unique than Laklands or Sadowsky's. To each his own. Hope my input helps.

Thanks for the info. Weird watching Vail on that bass. Totally different sound for him. Again, if that is a good indicative of the sound of the 5 string bass, I'd look elsewhere. Just my opinion based on my taste in my own sound. (My Lakland JO5 keeps me happy) The 4 strings kill! Jauqo, any chance on making a short vid with you playing yours?

The bass Vail is playing in that vid has an alder body.
You just might not be a alder body with rw fb kinda guy.

Not my thing either, but sounds great for what it is. It reminds me a lot of the LowEnd J's with those very tight, modern sounding humbucking J pickups and aggressive preamp (and non standard pickup placement).
Nice tone, but surely not anything like a 'vintage Fender' type tone.

You're talking US Lakland, I can't afford that! My Lakie is a Skyline. A USA Fender is more in my price range.
So are you telling me the Custom Fretless J they're meant to be building for me in the good old US or A is being actially built in Japan ? Or are just saying the standard XJ-5 and XJ-4 are made in Japan ?

The 4 and 5 string Xotic X-J-1T is made in Japan.
At one time they were made in the US.
You'd expect a price drop then, but i've just been told by the australian distributor that a price hike is coming.
I tell you one thing Xotic need to fix up and this is my only real complaint, it's how fast it chews through batteries. OUCH!!!! But if that's what it takes to get it to sound so good then so be it.

Xotic did a slight price increase for XJ-1T from Aug 1 already.
The standard spec price for 5-st was raised from $2,900 to $3,000. (US
list price) and 4-st was raised from $2,700 to $2,800 (US List price.)
I haven't experienced that problem.
I have the problem with all my Xotics, but it's something i'm happy to live with considering how good they sound.
