Someone I tried to jam with once on acoustic guitar told me "You could play bass". That was a kind way of saying I can't play guitar, but I think he did recognize some musical talent. I was struggling with Hawaiian steel guitar at the time, and eventually decided to try bass. Being comfortable playing steel on my lap, I thought it would be an adventure to experiment with a lap steel bass. A builder happened to have big chunk of yellow birch that he'd been saving for many years and was excited to make one for me. I finally found my instrument!
