so, I bought a Line 6 tone port and an MXL condenser mike, The line six came with gear box software, I tried recording ussing audacity and goldwave but couldn't make either of them work. What do I do to make this happen?

In general if using Windows, go to the Windows control panel, double click Sounds and Audio, go to the voice tab and click the "Test Hardware", if you have any troubles go to the hardware tab, select the driver and click "Troubleshoot"

so, I plugged a bass into the tone port and it recorded without a hitch, is there any way to see if the problem is in the microphone or the tone port?
I'm not familular with your hardware or software, but look for a tab or channel button to make sure that the mic input is active for that channel. If your bass records without a problem, then my best guess is that the XLR is not active for the channel you are trying to record on.
There is a phantom power on/off switch on the toneports. It;s the little button on the front marked +48v. You're going to need to turn that on to run your condenser mic.
Okay, you've got the UX1. It doesn't provide phantom power. You can only use dynamic mics unless you get a DI box that does provide phantom power.
This is little off topic but have you tried running two amp models at once? Sounds GREAT. It's the only way I run mine now. I get killer guitar and bass tones with it in this mode.

That phantom power supply in the link you posted will work fine.
To run two amp models at once: You need to split your inputs (I'm using an RBI's uneffected 1/4" and XLR outs)and plug into both the mic input and instrument input. In the upper left hand corner of Gearbox is a source select menu. Select Mic & Instrument. You'll now have a little guitar icon and a little mic icon to the left of the patch name. Click on each one to set the amp models.
