Am I on the right path for budget recording?

Looking at your audacity gui settings I think you may need to switch it from MONO to STEREO.
Also check the configuration settings to make sure that it's the right bits. I think the behringer is 16bits?
Default is 32bits float/mono for those input settings.

Just FYI last thurs I got my focusrite itrack solo and friday I some fun getting things to work.

I was confused initially because alsamixer came up with no controls. When Audacity fires up and I switch devices it takes a bit of time to "negotiate" or whatever it is, with some pops in the monitor. For the itrack solo the instrument cable goes into the right channel which doesn't record anything in audacity if the recording interface is set to MONO.

Audacity auto selects the bit rate, and at least on my UCA222, it auto selects 32 bit and seems to be working fine...

Just for your assistance, as well as anyone else interested in recording using Behringer USB via CentOS or RHEL version 7 here is the proof it can be done and didn't really take all that much work...

Simply put, I did a simple straight out of the box GNOME desktop install, made my first user admin in the sudoers file, added the EPEL repo for EL7, added the NUX! repo for EL7, installed ffmpeg, and its dependencies, installed Audacity and its dependencies, rebooted it with the USB interface connected, I was then able to find the interface and configure it in first the system audio panel, THEN in Audacity. Then I made my simple recording....
