You cancelled and accidentally sent payment to this vendor. He shouldn't have touched that payment and contacted you to ask if you wanted to rescind the cancellation.
What they did is akin to charging a credit card before you ship the item which is illegal.

Was there a detailed written agreement? Never mind, been watching too many court shows. Judge Judy would have a great time sorting out this case.

If I am reading this right you are not a jerk for canceling. Death in the family or not, he knew he didn't have the parts. The second he gave you a bogus delivery date knowing he didn't have the required parts he is the jerk....

If he doesn't return the money file a report with the police in his area...it may be a criminal act where he is located and that may force his hand.

I don't know exactly why, but it took me reading past the first ten messages to realize OP wasn't talking about kitchen cabinets.
