The NASA Mercury Seven were the group of the first seven astronauts for Project Mercury announced by NASA on April 9, 1959. They are also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1.

The chutes were attached to the top of the capsule, so it always 'splashed down' properly. The hatches were not opened before the flotation device was attached to the capsule.
