The Maeslantkering 'Maeslant barrier' is a storm surge barrier on the Nieuwe Waterweg, in South Holland, Netherlands. It was constructed from 1991 to 1997. As part of the Delta Works, the barrier responds to water level predictions calculated by a centralized computer system called BOS. It automatically closes when Rotterdam, especially the Port of Rotterdam, is threatened with flooding.

Miners have discovered a 11,000-carat (2.2kg, 4.85lbs) Ruby in Myanmar. Valued at $1000 a carat. Largest ever discovered was a 21,450-carat stone found in 1996.

So glad I didn’t live in the late 1700s. Dental care was still its bare bones even for the well off.
One of the most enduring myths about George Washington is that his dentures were made of wood. It’s quite possible that some of his dentures, particularly after they had been stained, took on a wooden complexion, but the dentures were actually made of other materials.
During his life, Washington employed dentures that were constructed of a variety of materials, including human teeth; cow, donkey, or horse teeth; hippopotamus, walrus, and possibly elephant ivory; lead, tin, copper, and silver alloys, and gold.
He even recycled some of his pulled teeth for fitting into subsequent dentures.
