A couple weeks ago, I told you all about the amazing Japanese Aerodyne (brand new!) that I had found on Amazon for $250 with cheap shipping here to the U.S. That turned out to be a mistake and the seller basically asked for forgiveness and asked me to cancel the order. I understood and half-expected that so I had no problem doing as he wished....no harm done.
From time to time I hear about people getting spectacular deals on Amazon but never had that experience. Good deals, yes...but I never found some stupendous deal that I couldn't pass up. Until the past couple weeks. I have been looking at the LTD Stinson sig model. Nice looking P/J bass and checks the boxes of what I wanted. Amazon has always had them listed for $899 as seemingly does everyone else. Not going to pay that. But about 10 days ago, saw it suddenly go down to $550. Hmmm...I had more interest at that price. Almost pulled the trigger that day, but came back the next day and it was $530. Delayed another day and it was $510. Then I sat here for the past 8 days and watched it drop almost exactly $20 a day. Each morning I would come in, refresh the page and see it drop another $20. And no one was buying it. Each day it would say 7 were available. It was not a third party seller. It was Amazon itself. I watched it drop and drop and drop down to $350. I got greedy, thinking it would either keep dropping or bottom out and sit at that low price for a few days at which I would pull the trigger. Then today....I came in, refreshed the page and it was back up to $899. Darn!!!!
I wonder what sort of algorithm is driving that pricing model and if anyone else has ever experienced this. If it was common somehow. I have never really bought much through Amazon, preferring to buy good instruments used. But, I am kicking myself right now. It was a hair under $350 for a brand new LTD Stinson. Maybe it will start another slide this week, who knows.
