Amp output vs interface output vs pedal output?

Hi guys, sorry for the potentially really dumb question. Can't find anything with the search function or a google search.

Basically I'm wondering what the "optimal" way to think about bass output for recording when stacking multiple sources with an adjustable output. Mainly what is the way to get the best tone and lowest noise I guess.

I have been running my interface output at zero and using my compressor to squash fairly hard to get in the ballpark of -6 all around. It is my understanding that it is bad to run your interface like this and that I should have some gain from it?

How would you guys go about setting levels in a situation like this, thanks for any help.

Your interface, if it’s a consumer grade device (ie one that has a preamp with no transformer in the signal path and remains identical in both frequency and transient response as long as you’re below clipping), doesn’t care what you do as long as you don’t clip the AD. Get your signal path sounding how you want it, hit the AD at about -6dbfs on your DAW’s meters and you’re fine.
