hello I am new to the bass & this site , I have a bass guitar but not an amp as yet, but i do have a fender champ 600 valve amp left over from my 6 string days... could i use this until I can afford a bass amp or will it blow it ? I just want to use it at home at low(ish) volumes.... thanks in advance ....

the problem is that you'll very likely blow the speaker. many speakers designed for guitar fall apart when used for bass, especially those designed for lower wattage amps. the electronics portion of the amp should be fine. I forget if that amp had a speaker bypass and/or a speaker out or headphone out jack. I have used guitar amps with bass speakers or good headphones for practice and a small gig or two.
some guitar amps do ok with bass, but they have some durable speakers or just so many of them that none of them get beat up too hard. the champ wouldn't stand a chance.

From the Fender site info, it looks like you can unplug your combos internal speaker and connect a standard 1/4" speaker cable directly to the combos amp section. So you could easily give it a quick try with a bass cab to see how it does.
Your combos internal speaker is rated at 4 ohm, so using a 4 ohm bass cab would be the safest choice for use with your combos amp section.
With a 5 watt tube amp, I'd be pretty much expecting very low clean volume levels, but it might just end up making a very cool sounding low volume fuzz-bass rig for ya.
(if your bass cab has a level control for the tweeter, you may find turning it down or preferably off may end up sounding best)
