Ampeg B15 Cathode Bias /Fixed Bias and Output Transformer

I'm building a B15 clone amp , and although I have an output transformer that's useable I'd like to wind a better one. I've wound them before so the making bit doesn't worry me , but looking at the 6L6 data I have a question. I'm wanting to put a Cathode Bias / Fixed Bias switch in , and looking at the Plate to Plate resistance of the 6L6 in class AB mode , the Fiixed Bias resistance is given as 6600 ohms down to 3800 ohms , which gives the standard sort of Primary/Secondary ratio you find on most commercial OPT for B15's. But the Cathode Bias p-to-p resistance is 9000 ohms ,twice as much . So the calculator I'm using for designing my transformer gives different ratios for each of the various p-to-p values , from a ratio of 21-ish for 3800 ohms to 33-ish for 9000 ohms. This suggests that you really need to have a tap on your OPT to suit , and I'm wondering if this is right - if so , I'll do that. It also seems to suggest that if you are using an OPT that is somewhere between the 3800 and 6600 ohms , around 5000 ohms is a number I've seen quite often which gives 25:1 ratio using 8ohms , then if you switch to Cathode bias you'd be better off with an OPT with a 16ohm winding , that would reflect as 10000 ohms....a bit much , but closer to 9000 ohms than your 5k transformers 8 ohm winding. But I've been reading about the B15 Bias Switch in Basschat amps / technical and don't see any mention of that, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Hi - apologies , I realise I posted the data for 6L6 rather than 6l6GC , but the same holds true for the 6L6GC ,the datasheet gives 5600 to 6600 ohms for Fixed Bias , 9000 ohms for Cathode Bias. It's not a neglible amount of difference and I wondered if it was worth taking into consideration when winding the OPT if I'm going to be using Cathode Bias.

The outout transformer in the older cathode biased B-15 was the OT-208 , which was replaced by the OT-214 for the fixed bias models I think. The only information I can see on the OT-208 is in the B15 Amps/Technical thread , which just says it was the same sort of spec but with lower wattage. But I can't really imagine the Ampeg engineers starting off the production of B15s with an output transformer than didn't match the output valves they were using in the configuration they were using ie. cathode bias , which had 9000 ohm p-to-p in the datasheet. Why would they choose to use 6500 ohms in that situation?
 
OT-208 was used for fixed bias as well. I can’t find the primary specs anywhere for anything but the OT-214 but the 208 was reportedly 6.5k as well.


Plenty of amps use the same OT for fixed and cathode biasing, including the ampeg heritage linked above. Also keep in mind the 9k is at those operating conditions in the datasheet, not the conditions in the amp.
 
Yes , maybe they liked having a bit more power and a smidge more distortion ....I'm not sure how you'd test under operatimg conditions , with a dummy load and a 1kHz input? Maybe there's someone who's done a teardown of an old OT-208 who could enlighten us as to what the windings were. I guess I'll just have to try it and see if it makes any difference using different taps .

The early cathode bias OPT used in the B-15 was a Stancor A-8056. The cathode bias amps were 25W, the fixed bias revisions were 30W. Cathode and fixed bias revisions used the same OPT.

Yes, they were both listed with a primary impedance of 6.5K.
