ampeg B2RE head

I have a problem with my Ampeg B2RE head. During gigs, about 3-5 songs in, the thing will go silent. Power is still on, lights are on, but no sound. Quickly, I reach over and turn the power off, then on again, and the sound comes back, only for a few notes. It's connected to an Ampeg classic 4x10 cab. I took it back to Guitar Center and they gave me a new on out of the box, and the same thing happend!! When the bass part drops out during gigs I get the stink eye from band mates, as well as total frustration. I've tried every setting, turn the gain up high, low master. Low gain, high master. I play an active bass. Can someone help?

1. Try a different cab for 1 practice session., to see if it is your cab.
2. Is your bass active, 9 volt battery?
3. Do you use a wireless, ( another 9v. batt.)?
4. bad cord somewhere, bass,head to cab, wireless to head, etc.?

I use a Speakon connection from head to cab, new 9 -volt, all cables good. The head does get hot, and both times the fan didn't come on. Is there some thermostat thing that click's off the sound until it cools? It happened with 2 different heads.?!?! Both Ampeg B2re's

Hey Wookie, I have had similar problem with my B2R. But its really random, like a ghost in the machine. Murphy's law says it'll only happen at the most crucial moment. I recollect it happening at a jam when I had the volume close to max and all my bass treble mid set quite high. Gain about two thirds. Switched off for 'bout thirty seconds and it came back ok Backed the volume off too. I haven't any problems if I keep the gain and volume at three quaters. Use your limiter too its a good indicator of hard your amp is being pushed. But agreed that its very hard to have faith in your performance when you know that at any moment your gear could **** itself! That fan should be spinning.

I have a blue-face BR2 that would occasionally go "no sound" but it would drive the speakers fully forward, like the amp was going full DC output. It was a mad scramble to get the amp turned off, speakers don't like a DC signal. Almost wet myself when it would happen, not a good sight.

Repair tech found cracked solder joints in the power supply section. Very easy fix and not too expensive. Maybe something to check into, not that you should be responsible, tho.

Good luck, I had good success with mine until this happened and I upgraded to an SVT-3 pro. I keep the BR2 around as a back-up.

I tried a dozen different amps and decided on the B2RE in the end. The tone is excellent IMO and I have had nothing but good luck with it. I liked it more than Eden, Mesa, GK, Mark Bass and Epifani. To each their own, I guess.

Paired with my Ampeg 1x15 and 2x10 cabs, it is as "quality" a rig I need unless my cover band starts playing 20,000 seat venues.:p :D

I've never had these problems (knock on wood.) the only problem with my B2R since I bought it in '94 is the fuse blew once for no reason in 1996. If it's under warranty, I'd have it looked at.

I never could figure out why everyone hates on these amps so much. They always work for me in a pinch, maybe not with the best sound in the known universe but it's always very respectable rock tone.
