Ampeg BA-108 Coffeeshop Micro Rig

A couple weeks ago I joined Talkbass and started a thread on upgrading an Ampeg BA-108 with an Eminence in hopes of getting advice from those who had (like Woodstockz).

I would like to thank Woodstockz and AstroSonic for their responses. In the end I chose Eminence over Faital because I wanted my amp to remain more "Ampeggy".

While I intend to follow up on my thread, Woodstockz appears to own the preeminent thread on ugpgrading the BA-108 with an Eminence S2010. Therefore, this seems to be the appropriate place to post my construction tips. Please note that many of these issues were addressed by Woodstockz in the previous pages of this thread. Also, I lean more towards "meticulous" than "get-er-done". It's up to you.

Take your time... measure twice, cut once, cut carefully. I mounted my speaker slightly higher, about 7/16" from the top, to stay clear of the port. But this caused problems with the grill, which you have to modify to clear the bigger speaker. I ended up adding some staples and used silicone seal on the grill cloth to prevent unravelling when I cut part of the grill frame away. Position the speaker at least 5/8" from the top to save extra work.

Mark and cut the speaker hole carefully so it fits tight and allows sufficient wood for the 8 T-nuts. I marked the circle on the speaker cabinet and used a piece of rigid foam insulation under the sabre saw to raise the saw enough to clear the edges of the cabinet. Whatever works for you.

Use the speaker to mark the 8 mounting holes. Allow room for the screw head to pass the speaker flange edge. I used the four existing screws and bought four more. They are likely metric. I drilled a 3/16" hole, which was slightly smaller than the t-nut, and used a C-clamp to pull each t-nut up into the hole. No problems with them falling out or needing glue.

For the port, Woodstockz cut a 4" hole and routed it with a quarter-round bit to fit the port flange to allow more wood for the screws. This means the port must assembled inside the cabinet since the inside bell of the port (about 5 1/4") is larger than the hole. Because, as a newbie, I want to experiment with port length, I chose a different approach. Using an aviation snips, utility knife, and file, I cut, trimmed, and smoothed the interior bell of the port approx 1/8" all around back to a casting mark. I cut a 5" hole in the cabinet and then used a utility knife to chamfer the edge about 3/16" so the outside bell would fit flush. This way, I can easily remove the port in one piece, add or subract from the length, re-assemble it with duct-tape, and test.

A great project. I only wish I still had a stock BA-108 for comparison...

I have pictures, but don't see the option to attach items as explained in the FAQs. Best wishes.

P.S. Woodstockz...A Z-3 coupe has lots of room for a big amp but the bass still has to sit in the passengers seat... from a Cold War facilities engineer.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I was out of town all week.

Under "Additional Options", I have "Miscellaneous Options" and "Thread Subscription" but I do not have the "Attach Files" you point to. Does anyone know why I don't have that option?

Hopefully this link will show you four pictures.

The first picture shows the 5" hole and the 45 degree chamfer or "bevel" I hand cut with a utility knife to accommodate the bell of the port. You can see there is plenty of wood for the screws.

The second picture shows the back of the grill I had to cut away to clear the bigger speaker. The "grey" at the top center is where I put black high temp silicone (its what I had) into the grill cloth to keep it from unraveling. I also moved the staples closer to the top of the frame so I could cut the wood away. If you mount the speaker slightly lower, its just less to cut away.

The third and fourth picture show the two new holes. To block the old port, I actually drilled from the front through the baffle and the "patch". I then put a little silicone on the patch and screwed it to the back of the baffle through the new port hole. I just have to paint it black. I think the speaker screws were M4-.70. I bought 4 more screws and tee nuts of the same size.

I would appreciate any input on why I don't have the "Attach Files" option. I enlisted help to do what I did.

Ask if you have any questions.

I don't know if one has to be a Supporting Member or not to attach. However since you have a hosting account, you don't have to attach them. If you push the quote button on my post, you'll see the format to use to imbed them in your post.

I do admire that craftmanship!
Instead of a BA108, I upgraded my BA110 with an Eminence S2010.
The sound and volume improvement is astonishing!
(and in contrast with the BA108, very easy to do!).
However, I really dig the effort and creativity by all the BA108 modifiers!

:)

I'm glad to see renewed interest in BA-108 mods and that someone else is doing the S2010 mod.

I went to a 3 series after the crash, but I should have gotten a Z-coupe because my B-15R doesn't fit in the trunk. Z-coupe would be great because I could use it as a track day car by day, and haul my B-15R around at night. I can relate to the cold war 'cause I worked in defense back then.

One thing that I didn't mention in the thread was that I tried installing a cone on the backside of the plug, opposite the flared port. The thinking was that it would make the sound waves inside the box easier to find the port. It didn't seem to make much difference, so I never posted it.

I started a few other projects that are on hold now due to moving to a new place. I've been pretty quiet but after the move is completed I will be around more.

As promised, pics of the speaker swap done on my BA108:

The new Eminence Alpha 8

Completed install

As has been mentioned by others, the difference was surprising...volume increased by about 3db with lows extended, no cone "fart out" even on the low B and a generally wider frequency response. I used gray eggcrate style foam on the cab interior, held in place with double sided carpet tape.

This one's ready for burn-in at my next rehearsal.

Upon my recommendation, my 12-yr old grandson will soon be rockin' an Ampeg BA-108. He's new to electric bass. Since I'm an eternal tinkerer, I'm already imaging how much "better" this combo can be with a driver upgrade.

Have any of you tried both the Alpha 8a and the Faital Pro 8PR200 in the BA-108? I'm curious to hear your impressions about the value of each upgrade. Does the Faital sound 3X as good as the Alpha? And how would you grade the Alpha to the BA-108's stock speaker?

I love the Faital driver in my Greenboy Audio Crazy8s. It's probably not "worth" spending that much money on an upgrade, especially since the amp is just 15 watts. But asking this question is free, so now I place my decision in your hands. :)

P.S. Just read the tech specs on the Alpha 8a and it says this is an 8ohm driver. The manual for the BA-108 says the driver is 4ohm. Am I missing something here? Thought this was a plug-and-play swap.

The New BA-108 V2 is 4 Ohms. The old one was 8 Ohms. If you go for a V1, try to find a tilt back version.

If I didn't already cut a hole for a 10 inch speaker, I would definitely try the Faital in a V1 BA-108. But that's just me. I'm sure that it would sound great. 25 Watts would leave some X-Max on the table, but there are a few things that you can do to bring the power up. I mentioned the resistor swap and transistor upgrade in the thread. You can also boost the rails a little.

The BA-108 V1 has the same circuit board as the BA-110 V1, but the BA-110 has a higher output transformer.

Ah, didn't know there was a v1 and v2 of this combo. What I presume is v2 is already ordered and on its way. How do you tell the difference between v1 and v2? Bought this from Sweetwater. That definitely puts a crimp in this upgrade!

Also, the online PDF manual says the amp is 15 watts, not 25 watts.

You probably got the v1 version. Outlets started showing the v2 for sale starting just a couple of days ago. The ampeg website has already changed over to showing the v2 amps and specs.

Unless I'm wrong it seems like the ba-108v2 is a pretty solid downgrade compred to the "v1" version.

V2 BA series was just announced a day or two ago. No one has one yet, so we don't know everything yet.

For info on the original V1 BA amps, go to the website, and click on the section that says "Looking for info on the first-generation BA combos?"

Sweetwater may not have V2s in yet.

I know this is OT, but the v2 manual shows an XLR-out so they've built in a DI. The older v1 had a 1/4" jack out so same capability, different path. Dunno, I think the old config offered better overall functionality. No idea how the tone/volume is different. My grandson's (apparently v1) arrives tomorrow. We'll put it through the paces this weekend and see what that puppy can do. I'm bringing a Crazy8 over to do a side-by-side.

If I worked at Ampeg, I'd have argued against the BA108 wattage cut, but really, it's the most practice amp-y of all of them and is really only good for the smallest of small quiet situations with 25w. And I'm sure Woodstockz will figure out a way to mod it to where it puts out 100w ;) Having said that, I'm not going to update either my BA108 or 110, and instead I'm opting for the BA112.
