They are quite different.....

4PRO, 1200 watts , all solid state power amp, tubes in pre.

6PRO 1100 watts , hybrid tube-driven mosfet amp, tubes in pre.

The power difference is minimal, the power amp technology involved is the big difference, and the preamps are somewhat different.

The 6PRO is smaller, also.

I'm not an Ampeg fan so I didn't vote.

However, I played tube amps for years from the 50s through the 80s and had no significant problem with them. I still have an all tube guitar amp with no problems. I have a friend with a Sunn 200 that she bought in 1969 and used to tour military bases for 3 years before settling down to a normal life. She still has the original tubes.

I recently was at a Marcia Ball outdoor concert. Don Bennett, her bassist of 20 some years, was playing through an SVT4Pro and an Ampeg 810 (I didn't see which model). He was not going through the PA and could definitely be heard and felt.

Of the 3 you listed, I'd go for the CL. If that's the tone you want, do it. Do you really think that a bass amp would require annual retubing? If that were true, they might as well give out complimentary "I'm an idiot" stickers to all purchasers.

I have 5 all-tube SVTs that get regular use, and I only had to replace a few tubes on 2 of them, and that was 4 years ago. They are all running very well, and they give me precisely the tone I want.

I was just looking at the owner's manuals for these three amps. There's a section in all of them that have "suggested" settings for different types of music. For all you ampeg owners out there, do these settings actually work? Or would you just start from there and then fine tune further? Do you disreguard them all together? Thanks...

I ignore recommended settings. On the SVT-II, for most rooms, with a Precision or Jazz I typically have the graphic eq turned off, bass somewhere around 4, midrange 6, treble 4. I usually leave the settings alone, but might add a little ore bass or mids on occasion.

On my old SVT heads, I use channel 1, normal. Ultrahigh and ultralow off. Midrange switch set to lower mids. Treble control around 9:00, Midrange control around 12:00, bass control around 9:00.

Turn off the ultra low and re eq your 3 pro. if you dont have the ultra low pushed in- and i'd be very surprised if you dont- then you must be playing in a VERY loud band.

i play in a 3 piece thrash band... my drummer hits hard & guitarist plays a 100 watt VHT pitbull full stack. 90% of the time i use an Ampeg SS150H solid state head (with an SVT 410+15)... that amp has gotta be less than 300 watts @ 4 ohms. Sure I have to turn it past 1/2 way, but its loud & beefy. I used to own a 3 pro & it also was plenty loud.

of course my SVT classic was even louder, but I never needed that much headroom. and my '74 SVT is so loud i cant use it in most of the clubs i play (with full PA support). IOW i cant get the '74 hot enough to get the tone I want without being way too loud on stage.

i never cared for the tone of the 4 pro & the 6 (i am told) sounds closest to the 3 pro.

I have eq suggestions to get the most out of your 3 pro if you'd like to PM me for them. but if you really want to buy a new amp i think that any of the 3 you mentioned would work fine for you. the choice would come down to what tone & features you prefer, because they are 3 completely different amps.

Well, seems as if the 3Pro is barely worth peanuts anymore. I guess in the year I've owned it, it's popularity plummeted. I didn't get nearly as much for it as I was hoping, so I went with the SVT-6 PRO(see sig). I ended up gettin it brand new for $850OTD! I played with the setting for about a half hour, and got it sounding the way I want. Anyone not happy with their 3 Pro, you won't be unhappy with the jump. Also, anyone not gettin what they want out of their SVT-610HLF, hook it up to this baby and you'll change your tune. It's like a different cab once you've got 1100 watts of juice flowin through it. Thanks again for everyone's input!
