Ampeg PF-50T - Local Store markup vs Overseas Purchase

Hey All,

So here's the situation. I am buying 2 new tube amps, one big, one small.

The decision on the small amp came to an Ampeg PF-50T.

There are only 2 stores locally in Australia that I can find that stock them and are charging $1835 AUD on Ebay or Best Offer. Which I sent them a fairly low ball offer but considering what it is and what I feel it should be worth was a fair offer.

They sent a counter which was practically that same as the original asking price. Of course I declined as I can actually get the amp from Thomann for less than my original offer.

I mainly put the offer in for a little more so I didn't have to wait 7 days for it.

So this particular store is not a local Mom and Pop Store, it's a relatively big store with a large on-line presence in Australia, and I do get that Thomann is extremely large.

So my question is, if the standard price for a PF-50T in Australia is $1800-1900 and Thomann can ship one to me for $1300.

Where on earth is all that money going?

Are the locals just assuming they will sell for that much?

Is Thomann purchasing at a lower rate than other stores?

If it was a small store, I would understand the whole brick and mortar costs or general costs to run the business but the 2 retailers are predominantly on-line and big businesses.

I've looked at many products where after shipping / tax there's no too much difference in price but really seems to be a massive jump particularly in Ampeg, Fender and Mesa. All the other major brands are usually pretty similar.
