Ampeg pf-800

Just got mine PF 800 about two weeks ago, and yes, sometimes there's a little tiny bit of a popsound, but that doesn't bother me.
To me, it's more than fantastic!
I tested it with a PF210HE Cab <I know: be careful with the master> and it's just a supergreat, fat, in your face, loud, groovy, drummer's smiling again kind of tone! (in my opinion at least :-)

Also in testing, the PF800 made my Trace Elliot ported 15 inch cab (from a 90's GP7 SM Combo) sound way better IME than the original Tracehead.
I've gigged it with a bluesband (PF800 + PF210HE + Trace Elliot Cab): supergreat, played with a STAX/Atlantic styled soulband: supergreat!
(did I mention "supergreat" yet?)

For the record, the Trace has served me well, but I'm saving up for a PF115HE to go with the PF800 and PF210. And Tracey will be my - never gonna happen - emergency amp.
And P.S.: no fanprobs either

I ran my PF 800 last weekend through a old Hartke 410 XL that belongs to the club I was at. I really dig the sound. It's straight up the middle no arts and crafts. The fan can't be heard in a club. Compared to my Super RedHead fan it's a mute. My Imac fan is louder than the PF 800

Going to run my Aggie Tone Hammer pedal through it this weekend. Here in the crib it sounds sweet.
Still undecided about the PF Cabs. I might go with Avatar's.

I got this bag for it also. Gator Mix B 1515. Plenty of room for the power cable and a couple speaker cables. I'll post some pics in a few

Bag is 15x15x5. PF 800 is 15x11x3
Feels like carrying a Pedal Train Jr

Ahh that maybe it. You cats be on it. It was a Hartke 410XL 400W 8ohm.

Ah no tweeter or crossover in the XL. So no joy. Just wanted to be more sure the amp could be to blame. Older simple crossovers can cause inaudible high frequency oscillations that can overheat some common class D power amp designs.
Haven't seen any cone speakers yet that caused strange trouble but will keep a note on it.

Yup sorry I forgot to mention no tweeter in the Hartke. Thanks for the info B. good looking out.:)

I just talked to a bass teacher at the local music shop. He's been playing/touring for about 50 years and teaching for a bout 40. He's played/tried just about everything and knows his stuff. Interestingly, he said he got to try out the PF800 that the store just got in the other night at a jam. He said he was amazed at how good it was. He would have gone on forever how about good it was but I had to leave before I decided I need to try one. Yesterday I didn't know anything about this amp and now I'm thinking it might be the perfect amp for me....lightweight, classic tone, fairly priced, seems reliable. oh the gas!

B-String:
I have a Bergantno HT322 and a Dr. Bass 2x12 both with crossovers.
How can I know if a PF series amp would have trouble with this set up?
FWIW a TH500 worked well with both; just not my cup of tea.

I have not read this entire thread but do you guys think the PF800 is more reliable than the PF500.

Not interested in hearing from any Ampeg endorsers :D

I've had both, and I think the 800 is more reliable (or I wouldn't have one now- and it's my main rig).

You're like the guy that you always want to prove wrong but sooner or have later have admit you are pretty much always right. lol Ampeg is amazing.

Yes, yes he is.

are there any current ampeg offerings who's preamp would sound like the svp pro preamp? (i know the svt 3pro..) the pf 800 looks to have similar controls, and i know its not tubes, but how close does it come?

Not close enough, IMHO. The -7PRO and -3PRO come closer. Nothing really nails it, though.
