Greetings Talk Bass! This is my first post. I have an Ampeg PF500 that cuts out when playing. I bought it from Sam Ash in 2015. I started having this issue in 2016 or early 2017. I wasn’t sure if it was my bass, cables, or cabinet. Come around to earlier this year and I’m playing with some guys and one of them has a sweet Amp (brand) head that I play through with my bass, cables, etc. No issues. So it’s the amp. Long story short, I bring it to a guy who looks at it can’t find anything wrong with it. Does find some research online that these amps have an issue with cutting out and that Ampeg has replaced the board for $160. So my question to all of you is: has anyone had this problem with PF 500? If so, did you replace the board and did it fix the problem? I guess I’m just trying to figure out how deep I want to get into it with this amp. I like it (not love, like), it suits my needs, and it sounds pretty good. Thanks for reading, Alan
Yes, they are NOTORIOUS for the "cutting out" problem. Playing through an 8 ohm 2 x 10 cab maybe? Here's a couple of threads, there are probably more. LOUD fails: Ampeg PF-500 failure stories, tell them here Ampeg PF issues cutting out? I assume it's now out of warranty. I believe Full Compass (?) sells a replacement mainboard that can be user installed.
Yes! That’s what the guy trying to fix it informed me about. I wish I had known while it was under warranty. Thanks for the advice. I will go look at those threads. I called Yamaha Guitar Group (now owns Ampeg) and spike with someone who confirmed it. I just want to know if the replacement board resolves it. Playing out of a Fender 4x10 8ohm cab so only getting 350 watts out of the PF-500.... it was a good deal though.
