Ampeg SVPCL Users Thread

Well been hitting the the summer festival circuit. So far this rig has been great. One problem popped up last week. Did a two hour set outdoors. 95 plus temp. The pre-amp shut down in the second set. Had to turn in off and it reset set after about 10 minutes. Anyone else have this issue?

Allow me to say this. Fat tone, fat tone, I am really stoked on the stellar fat tone I am getting from this pre-amp. And when you dig in it gives such a great little growl. I've never owned an ampeg before, but I see what I have been missing

I just got one of these pre's. Been messing around at low volume in the fx loop of a bassman combo and I like it....but really looking forward to getting it up to volume in the rehearsal room on Sunday.

My main pre is an Aguilar DB680 which I love but it'll be nice to hear the difference in tone from this classic 'Peg!

A big thanks to all who have contributed as I learned some good tips from all the posts :)

Gonna do some valve rolling this weekend after a wee test at home. Got some RT vintage valves going in and a match cryo pair of Harma's. I bet it'll still sound good. Oh and I checked the order of the valves is V1-AX7 V2-AU7 V3-AX7 V4-AU7

If I've got it wrong and it's AT's in place of AU's my bad but the order remains. I noticed mine were in the wrong order and I got a noticeable volume bump. For the guys talking about pre amp volume make sure the valve order is correct first!

Have SVPCL with the following tube complement (into a Crown XLS1500):
V1 Mullard 12AX7
V2 JJ ECC 82
V3 Mullard 12AX7
V4 JJ ECC 82
so far, my favorite sound from this preamp..
However, the last two gigs it started dropping the balanced line out feed, now it's intermittent. (amp feed is fine) Turning the preamp off and on restores the feed (to house), but this behavior is unacceptable. Anyone run into this?

I didn't have that problem, but I did have a problem where the amp had no output what's so ever. I took the amp in for service to the Amp Lab in San Jose, California. What he said is the some ampegs have a problem with the solder joint at the mute button. He did not find any problems with the amp so he re-solder that area and that must have been it. The amp worked fine after that. I'd check that area.

I love my SVP-CL, Its very clean and quiet. In my rig I a/b it with my SVP-PRO for the grind the pro has. It's been awhile since it's been apart buy if my memory serves me correctly there's some JJs and GTs in there.

+1 On this. Same thing happened to mine about 4 months ago.

Never had a problem with my CL, but a couple of years ago my PRO started making a cracking noise so I took it to a shop in Oakland. The owner told me that most of these Ampeg units from that era have bad solder joints in certain areas. He re-soldered them in my unit and no problems since. It was an easy fix and worth the money.

Depends on what happens after 20 hz. Since it's only the center, it can still affect a pretty wide range of frequencies, and my guess is it probably does.
