Ampeg SVT classic amp + SVT 8x10 cab + ext cab BXT210m = ???

...my friends are just confusing me with all king of info about Oms, Watts, etc., nobody knows for sure


So, how to connect those three properly? there are so many inputs/outputs, I'm totally lost in how run cables and if it would work nicely:

Ampeg SVT classic amp: 2 Oms/ 4 Oms switch; two 1/4 output and one Speacon output (in manual nothing about cab extensions)

Ampeg SVT 8x10 cab: Combined/Mono Mode 4 Oms 8x10; Split 8 Oms each 4x10; 3 1/4 inputs and 2 Speacon for different configurations (in manual nothing about cab extensions)

Ampeg BXT210m ext cab: 4 Oms; two 1/4 inputs and two Speacon (in manual: <The BXT210M can be the only bass cabinet for small venues, or as a stage
monitor in larger venues where the bass amp is also connected to the house sound
system or other bass cabinets in a backline system.>) So, it CAN be done; however, nothing said HOW...)


Please, let me know how and why it is done in my case; I'm afraid of damages to my gear, can not afford replacing parts

Unless your're playing the Rose Bowl - no, wait - even if you are playing the Rose Bowl, you're 8X10 is more than plenty!

I use my 4X10HLF for the clubs and my 6X10HLF for outdoor gigs in the summer and fall. Oh yeah, more than enough!

And while you're at it, hire some roadies to save your back!

right, it is enough power using only 8x10; I'm totally happy with it (and yes, it is heavy!)

I'm only want to get my personal monitor (this BXT210 deliver extra mid and highs; it has a rotary cutting down it's up register of full range system switch), at the opposite side of 8x10 in front of me; I'm planning also play wireless, so I can move freely between 8x10 cab and 2x10 extension :)

Just curious now, can I use 'in chain' connection? Like that: Speacon out of amp into BXT Speacon, Speacon out of BXT into Speacon 8x10; or any other combination with any combination of outs/ins and combination of 1/4 and Speacon cables? what switch on amp should be, 4 Oms or 2 Oms?? Asking just to get full knowledge on the subject

The last one: How long cables should/could be, anyway?

ps, sorry, I forgot that 8x10 has 3 1/4 outs and two Speacons, I fixed that in my original post

if you want a personal monitor, then the best thing to do is get yourself a little cheap micro head and run a line from the svt to it to power the 210. all you're going to do with this setup is cut the power going to your 810 and split it with the 210. i guess if you're not too loud, it should be ok, but no way i'd want to dilute what's going to the 810 for the sake of a monitor.

as for length of a speaker cable, it's pretty immaterial until you get into 50 ft runs or more.

yes, I suspected that sound would be different when adding to main cab and switching to different impedance...

this BXT is almost free, it is very cheap, I think, for $250

So, I assume I can use it in parallel at low and mid volumes; if there be need for full blast, I would have to look for deals on amps to run it out of slave output on my amp; I guess there is some requirements and I have no idea what specs to look for besides out of extra amp being 4 Oms;

another idea: can I use for this reason a power amp? If yes, I might get that (and I might use it with keyboards on other gig)??

an extra power amp will indeed work, as will just another bass amp. the line out or slave out (not the speaker out!!) of the svt can send a signal to it, and you can adjust the volume of the little rig separately.

there's just no good reason to run the little cab and the big cab off a mono SVT head; at loud volumes you're robbing half the power from the big cab, and at quiet volumes, why bring the 8x10 at all? just use the little cab by itself.

actually, i can't think of a good reason to ever need both cabs at the same gig. if you're running a real SVT rig and are on a stage big enough that you're so far away from it you can't hear it, there should be a big enough PA system involved to give you what you need in a monitor wedge anyway.
