Ampeg SVT Classic Replacement Backplate

Hey all,

I’m sure this has been asked before. I purchased a ‘96 Ampeg SVT Classic from reverb, works great just missing the original backplate/grill. Does anyone have a link to an authentic replacement? It does have a makeshift metal cover but I would like to get an original if possible.

FlipTops may have sold after-market replacements at one time. You cold give them a call. Also engage with Ampeg.

Probably the easiest solution is to fabricate one.

A metal working shop should be able to cut perforated metal and make any necessary bends. It won't necessarily be super cheap, and you may decide to stick with what you have.

Thanks for the info! I do have a friend that works in a metal shop that could do it I just don’t have an example to go off of. I was definitely considering that. I reached out to Ampeg but got the autobot reply, they said I could ask sweetwater. I shot my rep a message we’ll see what he says!

the plate that’s on there isn’t terrible but my gear ocd is making me want a match

FlipTops is out of back plates with no imminent plans to make or get more. (that's the word from Bruce at FT)

I recently found this SVT-VR rear plate on Ebay for $20 then modded it to fit my '78 SVT to improve the airflow and reduce fan noise versus the original perf back panel.

It wouldn't be hard to fab one from a piece of perf from McMaster.

It looks great; I wouldn't worry about paint if you bought stainless perforated metal. I believe the OEM backplates are black on the Classic, but not other SVT models.

I couldn't tell for sure from online images, but I wondered if the bottom of the back panel was bent at 90 degree angle so it does not come in contact with the chassis. I noticed your grill rests on the back of the chassis. My concern is this may make noise when you are playing.

Good catch, I was curious about how that fit. But yeah stainless. I didn’t hear anything but I didn’t really turn it up either so I’ll find out. Might be able to have it bent. It was a freebie I won’t complain either way
