Ampeg SVT-VR with SVT410hlf cab ?

I have an SVT3 pro with an SVT410hlf cab,
i'm looking at going all tube, probably the SVT-VR head.

Has anyone had any experience with the SVT-VR/SVT410hlf combo ?
The VR with the SVT810 sounds really good to me, but the 810 is just too big.
Would the hlf cab sound similar to the 810 ?
or would i be better off getting a sealed 410 to go with the VR ?

all personal preference. i myself like both cabs but for different reasons. the 810 is sealed and has a tight response to it. the 410hlf is ported and is looser, it will project the lows a little bit easier i believe. ive played the 410hlf for awhile now and have successfully pulled my lows out drastically and let the cab do what it was designed for. also it is cheaper and easier to transport. i will also say that i am getting rid of it and going down the 215 route because it doesnt satisfy ME anymore. IMO the vertical stacked 15s have a clearer tone. YMMV and good luck.

i would also note that i personally would get the 410hlf before the the sealed 410 version in a second, assuming money was not involved. plenty of punch, plenty of lows, plenty of projection. all IMO

the guy on you tube looked to be playing an 810 cab on it's side.
I have tried the VR with an 810 & this is the sound i'm trying to get close to,
(just without the bulk of the 810 cab!!).
The NV610 looks good, a bit more compact, i know a lot of people rave about this cab here, i'll check out the spec's.

I have used the SVT410hlf for 2-3 years & never been entirely satisfied with it,
always found it to be a little too boomy for my liking no matter what i did with the 3pro settings.

Since trying the 810 sealed cab for the first time, i have discovered that this is the sound/tone/clarity i have been looking for, tight, clear, & seems well balanced all round.

Might be worthwhile just getting the tube head & giving the hlf cab a try,
but i don't think it's going to get me the sound i want some how!

Any other cab suggestions ?
Anyone else had any experience with the VR + SVT410hlf cab ?

Yeah, i suppose i would have to get two 410he cabs, which kind of defeats the object!
Although, i have spoke to quite a few people who say it's ok to run an 8ohm cab with the VR & Classic heads as long as it has plenty power handling & as long as you don't push the cab too hard ? (maybe opening a can of worms here)
Any views on this - VR with an 8ohm 500w SVT410he cab ?

Any 4ohm 410 cabs worth looking at ?

I used to use a vintage SVT head through the 410HLF and I found it to be boomy and loose too. I was never satisfied with mine. I ended up getting two Ampeg Classic 210s in order to have 410s total at 4 ohms. The fact that they are much smaller cabs give them a lot better clarity. Each cab is rated at 200 watts at 8 ohms so a pair could be perfect for you. And it's modular so it is a lot easier to move. They are ported, but I think their small dimensions give them a tight, low mid thumpy sound. I just turn the tweeters off and they sound really good. I use an Eden Wt400 these days, but I bet you would have similar good results with the SVT.

The people you spoke to have no idea what they're talking about. Running a higher impedance load than rated is dangerous to the amp.

Sounds like a good idea, but i think ampeg have discontinued the 210he cabs now (not 100% sure though).
I think the hlf cab will have to go in the end, just can't imagine getting close to the 810 sound with it.

Ok, so i'm no amp tech & i don't pretend to know anything about that side of things.
I understand the basic theory in what you are saying, & i would probably not take their advice anyway (not wanting to risk damage to my equipment etc).
One of the people i spoke to was from ampeg support !
Two others were from well respected Bass specialist shops !

That's not surprising. Ampeg's "tech support" is a joke and was even before the Loud buyout. As far as music store "wisdom," it's only as good as the source they get it from. Even Guitar Player magazine has it dangerously wrong this month on this very subject. The source of their mistake is a widely respected amp builder (among people who don't know about amps) who doesn't know the first thing that he's talking about on the subject and has been repeating this falsehood for several years.
