Just picked up a good looking c74-75 V4 yesterday for $300. It's missing the reverb tank and back cover. Headed over to the Doghouse (practice space) to A/B with my recently refurbed 76 V4B.

Ampeg V4 -vs- V4b

Just for the record, I liked bass tone better with my old V4B than with my SVT-CL; 100 watts just wasn't enough power to use with inifecient cabs
Here's my V4B sitting on the newly acquired V4. Looking for some help in dating. The codes on components in the V4B put it at '76. It has 3 prong cord and no polarity switch. It says Magnavox on the back.
The V4 has master volume, 3 prong AND polarity switch, says Selmer on the back. I figure '74/75? Based on the white rockers, 3 prong but still has the polarity switch. No distortion rockers.

+1. I found very little difference between the V4 and the V4B once I got them dialed in similarly. Except the B just got caps and new tubes so has less noise. Just killer! Guess I'll do the same on the V4.
I kinda like the 3 position attenuation rockers on the V4 and the master vol setup. Though there's something nicely simple about just plugging in and turning a volume knob on the V4B.

I'm nuts over my V4B and probably don't need 2. Before I bond with the V4 would you be interested in it? Got something interesting to trade?

Long term I am looking for an affordable 70's SVT, an 8x10 fridge and a 2x15. Oh and also a B-15R. Got lots to sell (basses, amps and cabs)before I can do all that, but those are the things I'm craving right now. Big heavy things.

You have the best review I've seen of the V4B. Found it a couple weeks ago. I'm getting the new reissue soon but have also been thinking about an older original after seeing your review. Thank you.
