Ampeg V4BH (reissue) frequency switch

I've got this amp, bought it a few months ago on Craigslist for a pretty good price. Gig with it a lot, like the sound a lot. I have the gain almost maxed and then use the volume to dictate how much... well, volume I need for any given situation.

When I tried it out, the original owner had a Stingray, which is what I tried it on. Aside from having far more output than any of my basses ('64 Rick 4001, Hondo II P-bassish with humbucker), the frequency switch did a LOT more than with either of my basses... That is to say, the frequency knob does jack with either of my basses. Is there any way to fix this? Or is it just my bass selection and the lack of active input?

The selector switch is nothing more than a frequency center selector. To hear which frequency is being effected, crank up the mid knob. No need for an active input, but maybe you could try a preamp pedal of some sort, in front of the amp. Something like the MXR M80 would give you a little more tonal control, if that's what you want.

On my V4BH, I usually set it at #2 (450) or #3 (800) and turn the mid knob down completely. You can cycle through them to hear the differences- same as cranking the mid knob. I just always cut a section mid freq out with any rig I run to clean up the sound and give it some ultra low tone.
