I have a Gold Tone Microbass that came with Thundergut polymer strings. When Gold Tone came out with nylon core Silverback strings I put a set on my bass. Gold Tone recommends that you sand the peaks of the bridge a little bit when putting on roundwound strings so the strings don't get caught on them, so I did that.
When I plugged the bass in with the new strings, the sound that came out was way too loud on three of the strings and normal on the lowest string. I took the strings off, looked at the bridge and the pickup (which is just a flat piece that sits under the bridge), put the strings back on, and then the bass was way too loud on all four strings.
I expected the Silverback strings to be louder and brighter, but the volume was so loud that I had to turn it down by more than half to balance with the other musicians. I don't know if I damaged the pickup by pressing down too hard when I was sanding the bridge peaks. I didn't think I was pressing that hard, though. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this other than to buy another pickup and see if it works differently. Any suggestions?
