Using a real Sansamp RBI, RPM, or an Avalon with amplitube cabs and mics sounds pretty good. I think with some experimentation that this could work out well.

I do this all the time with a Sansamp PSA-1 and Red Wirez impulse responses. Same concept as you're describing, just different software. Works great. A great amp, in a great room, with a great mic, and a great preamp will typically sound better, but I generally prefer this route when part of that chain has to be compromised.
