Double Bass Andrea Spada Basses

glad to see this thread being active.

glad to see i'm not the only one who misses our friend andrea.

I wish I had placed my contrabassetto order years earlier so i could have one of those special instruments. the one we planned out was going to be so magnificent.

I really hope someone can copy the moulds and continue on the tradition.

I very much look forward to having the violin he started for me get finished. I think the final result is going to be something he would have loved. All the wood and the parts have been secured and are in the US, with a worthy luthier.

If anyone else follows marcos on instagram, he recently put tempora gut strings on his spada bass (the bass that really put andrea on the map for many of us.) it sounds even better than before... I wish i could see and hear that bass in person. especially in the hands of such a true master.

I think I said this above but in relation to Marco M using Tempora Guts, I have been playing with Perp solos and a G oliv on my Contrabassetto and it is incredible how open and full the bass is sounding. It did require a Pizz adjustment (one I was making anyway) but I am more tempted then ever now to spring for the Temporas which I have avoided getting because of the expense. But Contrabassettos love low tension strings. I had a set of Animas on there for a long time and the bass loved those too.

The Contrabasetto for sale in Brazil right now is a frickin steal. $3800 and figure out shipping (not that hard to do) It is an early Spada but has all of the great features- removable neck beautiful wood great design. These basses IMHO really benefit from a raised saddle (and it has one!), it just opens them right up. These basses play amplified like no other. I think someone should buy it and not ever regret it...even has the original (and VERY COOL) Spada bridge.

my god.

I would have killed for the chance to grab that contrabassetto!!!

Just this morning I received an update on the violin being finished. the luthier who has it was very impressed with the "ring" tapping tone of the top.

Is that contrabassetto spoken for?

would love to see it come to the USA...

I visited The Acoustic Bass Shop in South San Francisco yesterday in search of a backup bass and stumbled across a partially complete Spada that Alex is finishing for another bassist. Stupidly, I forgot to take pictures because I was rushing out the door to a meeting. Still, it was heartwarming to see another one of his basses.

very cool that someone else is having an instrument finished! I'd love to know more about the instrument, how he got it to USA, and so on.

Yes!

I am very happy with the decision to have Mitch finish the instrument.

I don't know mitch very well but i really like his style in general and only ever heard good thing. He's been great so far on this bizarre project, and he of course was friendly with andrea and understood his style perhaps more than many other makers.

I'm really excited for the instrument itself.. but to see it respectfully finished by someone who is highly skilled themselves, but admired Andrea's work greatly, is very cool.
